Glass Wild Pear Tree

The latest piece of public art can be found at the newly built Main Square of Orosháza. The five-metre high creature was dreamed and carried out by the artist couple Júlia Kovács and András Szilágyi.

Üveg körtefa

Júlia Kovács, Ferenczy Noémi award winning glass designer artist, who studied at Szeged, Tömörkény István secondary high school ceramics department and graduated from College of Art, glass department, in 1972. During the years from 1972 to 1979 she was the designer of glass factories from Nagykanizsa and Salgótarján. She has been an independent artist since 1980. Her husband, András Szilágyi, is also a glass designer artist. They live in Dömsöd.

The glass sculpture with the title „Re-population of Orosháza” is unique in Europe with its 5 metre height. Light and sound effects during the evening hours give the Main Square a special atmosphere.

The choice of placing a glass pear tree in the most visited place of the town has symbolic reason. The material itself refers to the main industrial activity of the town, glass factories represented the fund of local industrial life, gave start to developments of past decades. The pear tree refers to a historic legend: in year 1744 the new settlers arriving from Zomba on Saint George’s Day to the invitation of the new landlord, found a single wild pear tree in the deserted area to which they could tie their horses.

Visitors who go for a walk in the Main Square of the town will get a picture of the current and contemporary Orosháza through this piece of art.

Cheese manufacturing workshop at Orosháza

Milk processing have been known and practised by our ancestors, the early settlers kept dairy animals, mainly horses, cattle, goats and buffaloes.

Orosházi sajtkészítő műhely

According to the historical records cheese manufacturing in modern sense started to develop in Hungary quite late, although our ancestors knew and consumed both cheese and butter. Sámuel Tessedik founded the first diary farm at Keszthely, at the end of the eighteenth century. In the beginning cheese was produced by Swiss masters.

The introduction of pasteurized milk in the process of cheese production represented a milestone in the technology. As a result of this in 1904 the application and production of cheese cultures started and spread. However, mass production resulted in lower quality. In this way there is a growing demand for returning to the roots in gastronomy, as well as in cheese consumption: home-made cheese is becoming more and more popular.

As a response to the increasing demand, the owner Bertáné Székely Margit opened her cheese manufacturing workshop at Orosháza, which is known not only for the high quality of the diary products, but also for the possibility to get an insight in the manufacturing process of cheese manufacturing. What is more, braver visitors can try cheese making on their own.

The owner expects mainly families and small groups of visitors as the maximum number of guests that can visit the workshop is 5. Visitors are welcome at week-ends, holidays and workdays in the afternoon hours. There is also the possibility to taste the products as well as to purchase the preferred type of curd or cheese.

Gellértegyháza Historical Park

Visitors of Gellértegyháza, suburb of Orosháza town, would not think that the place used to be a military shooting range, later a place dedicated to waste collection. Nowadays it is a place of leisure activities, developing continuously due to the devoted local patriots, who have established the Foundation for Historical Gellértegyháza. Their activity is reflected by the achievements of the past years

Gellértegyháza történelmi parkChoosing this place was not accidentally, the district was called by local people „Újosztás” (=newly divided land): in the fifties it was place of archaeological excavations, when prof. Elemér Zalotay and his team discovered a cemetery of Árpád era. It also turned out that the ancient village lying here had the name Gellértegyháza. Over long decades political and economical interests dominated the tradition preserving ideas, first functioning as a military shooting range, later during the years of privatization the destruction went on, for examples trees were cut out and illegal waste collection was allowed on the place of the future historical park.

However, the new owner supported the initiative of the local patriots and started the restoration and construction works. Grandiose plans were made, which are carried out step by step. Historical exhibitions, accommodations, entertainment facilities, sledding and skating rink and adventure park was dreamed to be built here.

Naturally, Gellértegyháza is currently ideal for hosting different events. It is reflected by the high number of successful concerts, theatrical performances, festivals, tradition preserving events, summer camps of good atmosphere and the program organization is still going on.

The place is perfect, even in its present form, for team-buildings, family excursions or groups of friends who want a day with programs like barbecuing, drinking and relaxing.

Location of Gellértegyháza

Gellértegyháza is situated at the edge of today’s Orosháza, in a district called Újosztás (Map).

Bicycle Tour

Although most cyclists prefer the hills and mountains, hereby we would like to promote cycling on flat ground.

Bicycle TourThe first advantage of course is the fact that you never have to go up or down the hills. You can always see clearly the church or water tower of the next village. And last but not least unlike mountain region here you can’t get ticks.

Visitors looking for extreme challenges can surely rely on the local wind, you can always cycle against it, do not even dream of leading-wind. According to the local saying you will always and in all directions cycle against the wind.

Let’s come to the point: this page offers routes for visitors who wish to cover short distances.

Kardoskút-Pusztaközpont, White Lake: we highly recommend this route of 30 kilomteres to anybody, inependent of physical fitnes and experience. The route leads to White Lake, which is a nature conservation area, passing through Kardoskút village. The geographical, ornithological and biological values of the lake and its surroundings make it a protected territory. Tourists can visit the stocks of Hungarian grey cattle, racka and cigaja sheep.

Fit cyclists can go further and return to Orosháza across Székkutas. The last ten kilometers have to be done on main road, so this rout is advised only for experienced cyclists, who are accustomed to heavy traffic.

Pusztaföldvár, Tatársánc: it is a 30 kilometer route with final destination at Tatársánc, situated south-east of the village. People living at the end of the bronze age, around the centuries 8-5 BC, built the dyke Nagytatársánc for safety reasons.

Károlyi Castle in Nagymágocs: is also a popular destination for bicycle trips as visitors can easily spend a whole day here. The castle is situated at a distance of 12 km from Orosháza. It was built between 1896 and 1897 in an eclectican neobaroque style. The castle and its buildings were constructed based upon the plans of Miklós Ybl. The 40 hectare English garden and the building are preserved in their original form. Nowadays the building is operating as an old people’s home.

Tatársánc

The native grassland near the village Pusztaföldvár can offer exciting things to see not only for those who are interested in the historical period before the Hungarian conquest of the Carpatian Basin.

According to the official site of Körös-Maros National Park the valuable native grassland was discovered by dr. István Kiss, botanist in 1939 on the slope of this very rich historical place of Nagytatársánc. The double dyke was 3050 m long and served safety purposes.

Thousands of years ago the area between the rivers Körös and Maros was covered by loess grasslands with small patches of plain boscages, groves of maples and oaks. Later, as the grasslands were converted into ploughlands, the excellent quality grassland soils disappeared, thus the original vegetation has disappeared, and nowadays it can be seen only on some smaller patches on Cuman hows and confines.

The Tatársánc native grassland is such a relict that has survived during the centuries. People living at the end of the bronze age, around the centuries 8-5 BC, built the dyke Nagytatársánc south east to the village Pusztaföldvár.

The highly protected one hectare size native grassland is covered by species characteristic to the loess grasslands. According to Wikipedia such plants are: Teucrium chamaedrys, Viola ambigua, Fragaria viridis, Asperula cynanchica, meadow-rhubarb, hare’s foot trefoil and jacobaea (Senecio jacobaea) and Transsylvanian adonis, one of the most precious plants is the Salvia nutans that lives only in this area.

The area is accessible both by car and bike, but a hiking trip would not be too exhausting either, so we highly recommend it to everybody.
